Hiding newsgroup messages

W

Wickland, Tim

I began receiving postings from this newsgroup to Entourage back in early
October. Since that time, the list of postings has continued to grow, and
now stands at 2,717. My mail account settings are set to display only 500
headers. I also created and applied a rule not to display postings older
than 45 days, but this too had no effect.

Any suggestions short of deleting the Main Identity database?

In the Folder list, right-click the Microsoft News Server and select Empty
Cache. The older messages you can see are actually stored on your computer,
and that's the reason why Entourage will still display them. Emptying the
cache will delete all the Microsoft newsgroup messages in Entourage. If you
now click on this newsgroup in the Folder list again, Entourage will
download the last 500 messages only, as specified in your settings.

They will be deleted when the messages expire from the news server, but if
you want to remove them now then you can empty the local cache (right-click
or control-click on the server's icon and select 'empty cache') for the
whole server, not individual folders.

You're rule should work, but will need to be applied to the messages every
so often, rules on work as the messages arrive, and need to be applied
manually to older messages

You can remove individual messages from the listing though using a rule,
which is especially useful if they contain offensive content. Go to Tools >
Rules, click the "News" tab, and click "New". Create a rule that looks like
this:

Name: Do not show messages
*Execute if any criteria are met
IF All Messages
THEN Do not show article

Make sure the "Enabled" checkbox remains unchecked. Now, you can select and
remove items by going to Message > Apply Rule > Do not show messages.

Note that in your case, it's probably better to empty the cache every so
often as has already been suggested.
