hiding page number on first page

I am using XP and Word 2003 SP2. I want no page number on the first page of
a long document and the second page numbered 1. I inserted a section break
after the first page, inserted the page field in the second page header using
the header toolbar. I told it to start at 1 in section 2. I got a "1" not
only on the second page as desired but also a "1" on the first page, in
section 1. Any clues? Thanks.

You need to unlink the Section 2 header from Section 1 (click the Link to
Previous button to turn it off), then delete the PAGE field from the Section
1 header.

Another way to accomplish this that doesn't require a section break is to
check the box for "Different first page" on the Layout tab of Page Setup,
insert your PAGE field in the Header (leaving the First Page Header empty),
and set the numbering to start from 0.
