Highlight and delete

I can no longer highlight a piece of text and then hit my delete key. Can
someone please help me restore this function. thanks.

I am a WordPerfect person ( please don't flame me) so I have the same
problem when using Word.

I have found that when (using Word) I highlight a block, then hit delete,
there is a little line at the bottom of the window that asks you to confirm
a "block delete". Hit "y" (for yes) and the text goes away. If there is a
way to change this so that the "del" key works, I'd like to know also.
