Highlight changes in Word 2004

I am using Track Changes, with the Reviewing toolbar set to "Show Final";
in Tools/Track Changes/Highlight Changes, the "Highlight changes on
screen" box unchecked; and in the View menu, "Markup" is unchecked. I do
not need to track all the changes I make in my documents, and I never want
to see the changes on screen.

Yet whenever I toggle Track Changes on, with the toolbar button or my
keyboard shortcut, all the changes are revealed -- the reviewing setting
switches to "Final Showing Markup" and the "Highlight changes on screen"
box becomes checked.

In Word 98, I could, from the Highlight Changes window, toggle Track
Changes on and off while never seeing the edits on screen, and Word
remembered its settings. How do I accomplish this with Word 2004?

Well, they changed the behavior because of a security issue--too many
incompetents were sending out documents with tracked changes in them,
thinking because they couldn't see them they were gone, so now View | Markup
is automatically on.

WinWord has a preference to override it (I think), but MacWord doesn't,
which is exceedingly annoying considering the proportion of people who
really need it is much higher on windows. Argh.

Don't you have to uncheck View | Markup every time you open the document?

Anyhow, one suggestion to eliminate this annoyance would be to record a
macro of turning track changes on and view markup off, and then use that to
turn track changes on, so that you don't have to deal with it.

An alternative, which I *don't* recommend, might be to set the Track Changes
Preferences so that they don't really show anything.
