In the finder I am unable to change the title of a document. I can highlight fine, but no corrections are allowed.
I think this started to happen when I upgraded to Word 2008.
Thanks for any advice.

That has to be a co-incidence. 2008 is pretty evil, but it can hardly
climb in and pooch the Finder. If it had become that sentient I would
treat it with new respect. In Finder, try selecting the document name
then hitting "enter" (not return) to enable editing it.

It's fixed.
Turns out all I needed to do was to force quit the finder and restart it.
Thanks for your advice.

Well done! Thanks for posting back the result.
Finder in Leopard *is* a bit flaky isn't it? I see mine do a relaunch
all by itself a couple of times a week, particularly after backing out
of a finder style spotlight search, and it gets into an awful standoff
with my iDisk on dismount, for which I'm trying to get Apple's Mobile
Me support to take seriously.

The rumour mill says 10.5.5 is due shortly. Let's hope they fix it then.
