highlighted text behaving strangely

I don't know if I have changed a setting that might cause this.

When you highlight a bit of text and then start typing, the highlighted text
shoudl go away, as though you had pressed the delete or backspace key. At
least it did for about a hundred years. Suddenly it doesn't work that way
anymore. When you start typing while some text is highlighted, only the
highlighting goes away and the text remains.

I do use MS Word as my email editor. Maybe another news group would be more
appropriate?
