highlighting and overtyping bug?

I have noticed that when I highlight a word or sentence in word 2003 SP2
(and all hotfixes) that when I type the word or sentence does not delete.
Word used to delete the word and replace it with the word I was typing is
this a bug or a misconfiguration?

Misconfiguration.

Go to Tools > Options > Edit and check "Typing replaces selection".
