If you used a macro to highlight the text, it may have used text shading
instead of highlighting at least that's what my keystroke recorded macro does
in W2003. The quick way to get rid of the shading is to select the text and
press Ctrl+spacebar to clear all manual formating. But if you have manual
formatting in the shaded/highlighted areas you want to keep, get rid of the
shading by putting the cursor in a shaded area and going to Format > Borders
and Shading > Shading tab. If it is shading, the Apply to box will read
"Text" or "Paragraph". Change the color to No fill. A faster way to do
this is to click the paint can (shading) icon--after it's been set to no fill.
In W2003 it is on the Tables toolbar, among other places. In W2007 both the
highlight icon and the shading icon are on the home ribbon.

Does the highlighting represent a comment? If so, you have to delete the
comment.
I tried it before I posted this message, it doesn't work.
