highlighting text and pressing "backspace" does not clear characters

This seems like a simple problems but is annoying. In
word, uptil recently, when i highlighted text and
pressed "backspace", the text got deleted. i could also
replace highlighted text with something else by
highlighting and then typing. now, when i highlight and
press backspace, the cursor just moves to the beginning
of the highlighted section. what can i do to fix this?

aakash,

You have somehow changed the Typing Replaces Selection Setting in
Tools>Options>Edit. Check this setting to get the behavior you want.

Also, make sure that Navigation Keys for WordPerfect Users is turned off (Tools > Options / General tab)
