Highlighting text, and then hitting backspace not work - very frustrating

pretty much the subject describes it all. I will be
typing a document using pretty much any of the office
suite products, and if I decide to eliminate a large
section of my text, I would hold the mouse button and
block the text, then hit backspace to remove it. this is
not happening. I do not know how to, or better said
where to go to change the settings so that I can do this
again.

sugestions??

thanks for the response, but I was looking for a fix to
correct it. I have been doing that in the meantime.
