highlighting text when I point cursor in document

I accidently activated some function that is causing sections of text to be
highlighted when I point to any area of my paper. I just want to point and
start typing, it isn't allowing me to add any more text to my document.

I am not sure whether I understand your description correctly but it sounds
as if the problem could be that you hit the F8 key. It brings you into
extended selection mode. If that is the case, you can return to normal mode
by pressing the Esc (Escape) key.

A little more about using F8:
You can use F8 to extend the selection to a sentence or paragraph. Press
once to select a word, twice to select a sentence, three times to select a
paragraph and so forth. If you click in the document, then click F8 once and
finally click somewhere else in the document, all content between the first
and second selection point will be selected.

It may take a little time getting used to F8 because it brings you into
extended selection mode. You need to press ESC to return to normal selection
mode (the current selection remains even if you press ESC). Note that you can
use Shift+F8 to reduce the selection, e.g. from paragraph to sentence to word.
