Highlighting, then typing - AND IT DOESN't DELETE!!!

Something mad has suddenly happened to my Word - when I
highlight a bit of text, then type something else to go
over it, it now keeps the highlighted bit. I didn't
realise how annoying this is until I realised how much I
use the highlight/ delete facility, by not being able to
use it.

Take a look at this article

I selected a block of text and pressed Delete (or Backspace) and
nothing happened!
