Hightight and delete by over typing or backspacing not working

Help. I did something wrong and can’t find the fix for it. I can no long
highlight something then press backspace to delete it or highlight something
and replace it by typing over it.

MS Word 2003, WinXP

Thank you in advance. This is really annoying

Select Tools > Options > Edit tab and turn on "Typing replaces selection".

Thanks for your help. For some reason I could not even remember to search
through Tools/Options and it was driving me nuts because I spend long days
every day writing.
I saw your site. It is interesting. I will look again more closely, but that
may wait a few months until I leave the Philippines to return home to America.
