History of Outlook and Outlook Express development

Which came first and was one derived from the other ?

I haven't been able to find any detailed information about the origins of
either, except that OE shipped with early versions of Internet Explorer..

I vaguely remember reading somewhere that Microsoft purchased Exchange Server
from another company. Did Outlook come as part of that deal?

Why isn't OE just a "lite" version of Outlook. It would make life so much
easier for users, developers and administrators. Why have two distinct
products?
