Hit Counter not working on Intranet?

I have inserted the Front Page (2002) counter on our department's Intranet
site, but it doesn't seem to be totalling up all hits -- it's doing it on a
local basis at each user's workstation. For example, I reset the starting
number to 4000. Every time I hit the page, it adds 1 to this number. But
other users report that their starting number displays as 1 and goes up from
there. The counter isn't accumulating and displaying all of the hits in one
place. Any ideas how we can fix this? Thanks!

The hit counter just reads the counter value in a text file and adds 1 to
it. By default, the IUSR account should have permissions to write to this
file. It may be that the IUSR account doesn't have permissions to access it,
nor the accounts for the Intranet users. It could be that, since the counter
can't find or access the file due to permissions it just displays a 1. The
file will be located in the _private directory for that web and will have
the exact same name as the file that it's included in, but ends with a .cnt
extension. Check the permissions on the _private directory as that could be
the problem.

Hope this helps,
