hit counter

I am having a problem placing a hit counter on my web page using Front
Page.
Instead of looking like a hit counter it just shows the words "Hit
Counter"
with a red X to the left of the text. Can you tell me what I am doing
wrong?

I believe a hit counter only works correctly when you are publishing to
a web server with FrontPage Extensions on it.
