Hit Counters on Every Page

C

CJB

I have a large web site hosted on http://www.freeservers.com They
allow hit counters on every page - the stats being stored in one file
- fpcount.js My site is over 10 years old, and many pages have hits in
the thousands. However recently I've noticed that some counters have
been reset to zero. I investigated and found that over the years the
fpcount.js file has become corrupt. Although I pay Freeservers to host
the site all enquiries to their Customer Service about the corruption
of the hit counter feature are ignored. Therefore I am seeking a
commensurate service. I have tried FP Hit Counters but it seems that I
can only have one - say on the home page. Also it doesn't seem
possible to set the cointer to say start at 5000 (which is where the
previous counter got reset to zero). Is there a service somewhere on
the web - perhaps provide dby MS or maybe supported by a server
running FP Extensions etc. Many thanks - Chris Brady.

The FrontPage hitcounter can be placed on every page - it creates a unique counter file in the _private folder for each page, and each can be set to start at any number you wish.
However, my experience of the FP hit counter is that it is not reliable, and in my opinion hit counters are so last century.

The hit counter requires FrontPage extensions on the server.
Open a page in FrontPage, then Insert->Hit Counter
To set the counter, open the _remote_ site in FrontPage (not the site on your PC), then open the _private folder.
Open the appropriate .cnt file and edit the number shown - do NOT change the number of digits. Save and close the file.

If you are looking for statistics, then try Google Analytics - this will tell more than you want to know about your site and visitors. But it will start at 0.

But I not not like their Site Search is why I go with http://www.free.com

I do not like http://www.freeservers.com/ free web pages is why I Go to My

I pay comcast $28 a mouth Why would have a for free Sub Host Name by
http://www.free.com and get no CGI, PHP, and running FP Extensions ... when
I can have it all now on my PC <<Hmm

Thank you for the help. I have managed to log in to my web site with
FP. I now have one page with a FP counter on it - just to see how it
works. It started at zero. I couldn't get it to start on anything
else.

Also I have managed to open my web site on the Freeservers server. But
when I looked in _private folder (at the web root) there was nothing
there!!! So where is the cnt file please? I guess there must be at
least one!!

I have tried Google Webmaster / Analytics and that's a very good
service.

AND the FP hit counter does not seem to change from '1' -

See: http://chrisbrady.itgo.com/canals/pamela.htm

This page also does not seem to have any _private folder associated
with it, and certainly no cnt file.

What am I doing wrong please?

Chris B.

R

The _private folder should be located at
http://chrisbrady.itgo.com/_private

I can see nothing wrong with the code on the page, but cannot access the _private folder - this is NOT a problem, I should not be able to access the _private folder.

As I said, I have found the hit counter to be unreliable.

To set the initial count - open http://chrisbrady.itgo.com in FrontPage, then either:
1) Open the _private folder, open the .cnt file in FrontPage and change the number shown - do NOT change the quantity of digits - then save the file.
Or
2) Open the page and right click the hit counter.
Choose "FrontPAge Component Properties"
Tick the box "Reset counter to" and type in the number to start at.
Save the page.

If the counter does not increment - it should every time you refresh the page - then you may have to ask your host to investigate.

The _private folder is the one you found in the root of the site, there should NOT be a _private folder in the canals folder - unless this is a subweb.

Try opening the remote site, remove the hit counter on pamela.htm
Save the page, then insert a new counter.
If this does not create the .cnt file in the _private folder (in the root of the web), then there are other problems that your host will have to solve.

Go to http://www.95isalive.com/fixes/HitMeFP.htm and download the program described there. This will generate a custom hit counter image based on your own settings (font, size colours, etc.)

Thank you yet again for your help. I will have a go at buidling my own
counter graphic. And I'll have a go at the hints above for the
_private folder. Freeservers is suposed to support FP Extensions so
I'll have to consult with them if things don't work. My site is a
'paid for' site after all.

Meanwhile if hit counters are so last century what do advise as an
alternative. Google Analystics is a bit too detailed for me!!

Just tried using direct addressing to a custom gif file - which
doesn't work either - and this is the code:

Also I tried using FP gif file (no. 4) - which also doesn't work - and
this is the code:

I think that the 'bug' is the line:

SRC="_vti_bin/fpcount.exe/chrisjbrady/?

This is referencing a path on the server that does not exist. On the
server there is a _vti_bin/ folder in which there is the bin file
fpcount.exe

However the reference to chrisjbrady/ comes from the folder in which I
am using FP to building the web on my D: (data) drive. This
arrangement is not replicated on the server. The label 'chrisjbrady'
does not exist on the server. The web on the server is http://chrisbrady.itgo.com

For executing fpcounter.exe the path is:

http://chrisbrady.itgo.com/_vti_bin/fpcount.exe

I think that I need to remove the chrisjbrady/ from the code on the
server - but I'm not sure how it got there or how to stop it
appearing.

Please can someone advise. Thank you - Chris Brady.

R

Ronx

Open http://chrisbrady.itgo.com in FrontPage - this is the site on the server, not on your D: drive.
Open the page with the hitcounter
Remove the hit counter
Save the page.
Insert a new hit counter
Save the page

Check if it works.
Since you are editing ON THE SERVER there is no chance that your folder on your hard drive can be involved.

I can see nothing wrong with the code on
the page, but cannot access the _private
folder - this is NOT a problem, I should
not be able to access the _private
folder. As I said, I have found the hit
counter to be unreliable.
To set the initial count - open
http://chrisbrady.itgo.cominFrontPage,
then either: 1) Open the _private
folder, open the .cnt file in FrontPage
and change the number shown - do NOT
change the quantity of digits - then
save the file. Or 2) Open the page and
right click the hit counter. Choose
"FrontPAge Component Properties" Tick
the box "Reset counter to" and type in
the number to start at. Save the page.
If the counter does not increment - it
should every time you refresh the page -
then you may have to ask your host to
investigate. --

The FrontPage hitcounter can be
placed on every page - it creates a
unique counter file in the _private
folder for each page, and each can be
set to start at any number you wish.
However, my experience of the FP hit
counter is that it is not reliable,
and in my opinion hit counters are so
last century. The hit counter
requires FrontPage extensions on the
server. Open a page in FrontPage,
then Insert->Hit Counter To set the
counter, open the _remote_ site in
FrontPage (not the site on your PC),
then open the _private folder. Open
the appropriate .cnt file and edit
the number shown - do NOT change the
number of digits. Save and close the
file. If you are looking for
statistics, then try Google Analytics
- this will tell more than you want
to know about your site and visitors.

far so good!!
And I've made a gif file and put it into

then uploaded the page and gif file to my
website. But it doesn't work for some
reason. I used relative addressing too. Am
getting there.

Ok - final problem is where does the
custom.gif file go please? Wherever I put it
all I get is a red cross and 'Hit Counter'

The code in the page with the counter is:

Additonally the file fpcount.exe is in the
folder _vti_bin

The above pertains to the client side running
FP, and web server side.

But the counter doesn't work. The contents of
the file TestPage.htm.cnt never changes.

It seems that the file fpcounter.exe does not
action anything.

Just tried using direct addressing to a custom
gif file - which doesn't work either - and this
is the code:

Also I tried using FP gif file (no. 4) - which
also doesn't work - and this is the code:

I think that the 'bug' is the line:

This is referencing a path on the server that
does not exist. On the server there is a
_vti_bin/ folder in which there is the bin file
fpcount.exe
However the reference to chrisjbrady/ comes
from the folder in which I am using FP to
building the web on my D: (data) drive. This
arrangement is not replicated on the server.
The label 'chrisjbrady' does not exist on the
server. The web on the server is
http://chrisbrady.itgo.com

C

CJB

Openhttp://chrisbrady.itgo.comin FrontPage - this is the site on the server, not on your D: drive.
Open the page with the hitcounter
Remove the hit counter
Save the page.
Insert a new hit counter
Save the page

Check if it works.
Since you are editing ON THE SERVER there is no chance that your folder on your hard drive can be involved.

The _private folder is the one you found
in the root of the site, there should NOT
be a _private folder in the canals folder
