Hit one symbol key and get wrong symbol

My colleague has sent me a query. It seemsthat she's 'converted' her
keyboard in some way. How does she reset it? This is what she writes:

I’m sitting typing e-mails and things and have found a really peculiar thing
happening. When I type quotation marks using shift and 2 if comes out as a @
and when I type the at symbol using shift and apostrophe it comes out as “
When I want a pound sign it comes out #
Here’s all the figures above my numbers at the top of the keyboard:
! @ # # $ % ^ & * () – 2 and 3 are wrong (and where’s my pound sign gone?)

How weird is that??????

I've just suggested she reboot. This worked of course, but still interested
to know how this happened.

Thanks. She must have hit an unusual key combination to get there. But all
fixed now.

It sounds as if she ended up with a US keyboard and she's in the UK. Control
panel - keyboard language
