Hmmm ... where did that go?!?!

1. Insert a Word doc into a onenote page.
2. Double click the embedded Word doc to open it in Word.
3. Change something in the doc.
4. select Save As, and save giving the doc a new name (e.g. "Blah.docx")
5. Close Word.
6. Blah.docx does not exist anywhere (inside or outside OneNOte)!

Where did it go?

When you inserted the file into OneNote, a copy of the file was made to:

C:\Documents and Settings\[USERNAME]\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\OneNote\12.0\OneNoteOfflineCache_Files

Any changes are made to this copy of the file.

Thanks for the reply.
Unfortunately it does not provide a solution to the problem.

As you say, changes made to the document are saved back to the
OneNoteOfflineCach_Files store (I am using Vista so the directory structure
is a bit different
(C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Microsoft\OneNote\12.0\OneNoteOfflineCache_Files)).

However, the problem only occurs if you save the doc back under a
_new_name_. The new document (with the new name) does not exist anywhere
when you close Word and OneNote.

It appears the doc (with the new name) is saved to a OneNote temp area and
that temp area is cleared out when OneNote closes, so the new doc ceases to
exist! Not exactly a good 'feature'.

Can anyone shed any light on this please.

I see, now.

It may not seem like a satisfying answer, but when you "save as..." you'll
just have to make sure you pick an appropriate target directory.

If you want to work on a copy of a Word Doc from an icon in OneNote, and
then have the copy reside also in OneNote, then I would copy the icon first,
then open it up.

I don't think OneNote is able to "see" what you are doing to files as you
work with them in Word. It just knows how to link to the ones it put in its
cache, or to link to the original files.
