Hoe to recover word document

Following problem:
I recoverd with pc filerecovery 5 word documents.
example: cluster 300405.doc
When I try to open it words tells me I need a converter tool.
After installing the converter tool problem remains.

Was overiden with new install of XP

then the recovery tool probably made a mistake and wrote junk to the file
instead of the actual data.
