holidays not shown - eg. click on Easter Monday - no mention of it.

I have added the UK holidays to my calendar but when I
view one of the holiday days (eg. Easter Monday) there is
no reference to the holiday at all. (Using Outlook 98)

The holidays file that came with Outlook 98 is very outdated by now. You'll
need to download and install an updated holidays file. Links to several
such files, and instructions for using them, can be found here:
