Holw do I change background colour of a theme?

I am a new user of Frontpage 2003. I would like to customise a theme and
have a different colour background. I went into customise theme and changed
the background colour, unticked background picture, and ticked vivid colours
and saved as another name. When I apply this to web pages, the background
colour doesnt appear, but the background picture of the original theme does
show. Could someone less dense help me please?
