I bought home and student directly from the microsoft web site 20 months ago
and the computer it was on has crashed, now i want to install it on this new
lap top. I have the product key but where do i go to start this process?

From the backup file or CD you created when you downloaded the original
install file from Microsoft.

If this was a converted trial software, you may not be able to transfer it
"legally" to a different machine. Most of the trial software is equivalent
to OEM versions. Since I haven't seen the EULA for your version of software
that you downloaded, or the country in which you live, the last statement
may be inaccurate.
