home directories & Word 2004 rebuilding component database

P

Philippe Devaud

Hello,
We have the same "problem" in most schools have somebody a solution
for that "Microsoft" problem ?

Each time a student fires up Word 2004, it has to rebuild its component
database. The rebuilding process can take over 2 minutes on an iMac 333,
during which time the student can't do anything. (That's an improvement. It
took over 5 minutes before the last patch.)

Once the database is rebuilt, the student can work normally. Even if he
quits Word and restarts Word, it only takes a few seconds to start up. That
is, unless the student logs onto a different iMac in the lab the next time
he wants to use Word. Then it takes another 2 minutes.

Hey Philippe,

What do you mean by "Component Database"? Are you referring to the list of
items on the splash screen when you launch Word?

If so, which one(s) is Word stuck on for so long it's launched?

Thanks

Could you give us more details about the type of setup?? It sounds like
you're using NetBooting.
The component database has tobe written for the specific Mac you're
launching Office from. If you use the same user account from another
Mac, then it will have to be rebuilt.
I don;t see any workaround for that (I fear the MacBU would have to
completely rewrite the way the Component database is managed).

Hello Jeffrey,

Your right, I reffer to the list of items on the splash screen when you
launch Word.
We are working with OSX server & OSX client. The home directory of
users are store on the osx server we do have so "migrating" profiles.
When a user log on the client and start word, the content of the home
directory document office is rebuilt, If he start a second time it's
not rebuilt ... On a local machine with local user it's OK.
Can we configure Word in the same way as delete the dofont script for
that is not rebuilt if we change the machine ???

Kind regards
Philippe Devaud

Hello Jeffrrey,
After a lot of tests, we can say that the two "spashing" that take a
lot of time are:

WIndows Media Player Installer
Font optimisation

Kind regards
Philippe
