Home project : Family Web Server

Well since I don't have enough to do in raising a 4 year old, a 2 year
old and rebuilding a 115 year old home from the inside out, I thought
I'd try my hand at setting up an old Dell PIII system as a web server
for the home. And I don't just mean to act as a gateway. For that I
have a fairly decent little router. Along the way I'd like to setup a
database so that I can start getting a little more familiar with them.

So anyway, what OS and database would you kind people recommend for a
starter ? Note that this has to be done on somewhat of a budget as
SWMBO is still out on maternity leave for nigh on 6 years now. That
said my employer is generous and I can use virtually any MS software I
want to try.

John -
In the Microsoft family, anything from NT4 up for an OS. I never got to use XP server.
Access is a more robust database than a lot of people are willing to admit. SQL Server
skillls might be more marketable tho, if that's a factor. From your standpoint, not a lot
of differences.

From your other post, I couldn't tell if you were planning to store music, video et.al.
in the database. I don't think you want to do that. Store the location instead.
Sounds like you really need the new hobby, cause all that just sitting around idle is bad....
