Hoover Buttons

Tom

I have recently installed Frontpage on a new laptop.

When opening the webpage on this laptop, the Hoover Buttons do not show up
(they have a "Red X" in their boxes. On a different machine, the website &
the hoover buttons are displayed properly.

Does anyone know what (Add-Ins, class files, etc. ) might be missing on the
laptop?

Thanks,
Tom

The laptop needs java virtual machine installed
as it no longer is installed with IE6.
It is available from Sun Java.
( if you can figure out which download it is )

For this reason, most folks no longer use hover buttons.

Hi Tom,

The current version of Windows do not supply the Java Virtual Machine that
is required to run them. You can download it from http://www.java.com

IMHO, I would move to mouse over images for the hover.

Steve:

Thanks for your prompt reply.

I went to Sun Java's website... will "Java HotSpot Virtual Machine 2.0" (for
Solaris Operating System, SPARC[r] and x86 Platform Editions; Linux;
and Windows NT) do the job?

I use Windows XP as my OS.

Steve:

another follow-up question....

You indicated that IE6 does not provide the virtual machine any longer.
Does that mean that anyone (who uses IE6) cannot view the website either?

I have been using the hoover buttons on the particular website for years.
I have viewed the site at many different locations and never saw a problem.
But then, maybe those locations did not have the latest version of IE
installed.

If it's only that I need to install the virtual machine, I will continue
using them. Otherwise, I will have to look into other options.

Thanks again,
Tom

Possibly. XP and 2003 were not shipped with java support.
SP1 (not SP1a) for XP did contain Java. Just about anyone
who has AOL also will have java installed. MS can no longer
provide it though.
When I became aware of this issue I removed the hover
buttons and replaced them with gifs using DHTML effects.

XP with I.E. "out of the box" so to speak
will not have JVM.

Machines upgraded from IE 5.x to I.E. will
have JVM.

Most folks are using image swaps or CSS
instead of hover buttons for that very reason.

Mike:

In suggested in the previous threads, Mike and Steve recommended the same
approach. I'll go ahead and replace the hoover button with some DHTML now.

Again, thanks for sharing this w/ me.
