Horizontal lines throughout text areas of print layout view

In Word XP and 2003, the print layout has horizontal lines
throughout the text areas. These show where the text
areas are, but make reading and editing text in this view -
- which is the only one that shows headers and footers --
very difficult. I have been unable to get rid of these
lines. Does anyone know how to do so?

Have perhaps got grid lines showing? (Draw menu, Grid dialog, from the
drawing toolbar).
