Hotmail & Entourage 2004

I use Entourage as my mail client. With the exception of a few
correspondents, after e-mail has been automatically or manually
downloaded from Hotmail by Entourage, it is moved into the Hotmail
server's DELETED folder (not as a result of an Account setup setting
or an Entourage preference setting, but apparently as a result of the
Microsoft designed integration between Entourage and Hotmail). But,
several correspondents' e-mails are never cleared, i.e., never moved
to DELETED after downloading. Instead they remain on Hotmail's web
page as UNREAD. Consequently, I receive the same e-mails over and over
again until I go to the Hotmail web page to manually delete them. I
can see no relationship between these stubborn e-mails and their e-
mail accounts' addresses, i.e., they vary from AOL to SBCGLOBAL to
private server addresses. And other correspondents' mail with the same
e-mail account suffix (e.g., @aol.com OR @sbcglobal.net, etc.), always
are deleted, while these few are never. Are there any steps I can take
to overcome this problem? FYI-I operate in OS X v.10.4.10, but this
has been going on forever, i.e., through all iterations of OS X and
with Hotmail and Live Hotmail.

To eliminate Entourage as the source of the problem, create a new Identity
in Entourage and try downloading your Hotmail there. Does it cause the
messages to be correctly deleted? If yes, then it's your regular Entourage
database. If no, then it's a Hotmail server problem.

Well, I guess this confirms my suspicions, i.e., it is not Entourage,
but is Hotmail. I did exactly as you recommended, created a new
Identity and waited for several days to receive a e-mail message that
just would not clear (i.e., after polling the Hotmail server from
Entourage, it downloads the e-mail but the e-mail's status remains as
unread on the server, thus repeatedly downloading over and over again.

Now, I hope you will communicate with the powers to be at Hotmail to
look into this because they won't do it for me.

Thanks for being the sole respondent that actually took the time to
evaluate my issue.

I'm just a user like you and have very little clout with Microsoft. I would
send feedback and make your complaint.

You can also vote with your choice to get another account like Gmail.

You're welcome. I really didn't offer much help other than identifying the
source of the problem.

Hi, I am new to iMAC, and to Entourage. Not sure if I have the same problem described above or something else.
I have set up Entourage with my hotmail account. When I send and receive the messages come in to the various folders. When they have all synchronised - they then start disappearing leaving all the folders empty. Any ideas what is happening?
Thanks

Often, users have show "Flagged or Unread only" selected under View in the
Menu bar.

I have a Live Mail custom domain for my email. I can use it with Windows Live Mail Desktop, but it does not work in Entourage 2008 if I try to set it up. I have not seen it as a known issue and have not seen anyone say it will not work, it is Live/Hotmail, does anyone have any insight? I have another post, but nothing has been responded to so figured I would try this (somewhat active) topic here.

Thanks for any help.

LiveMail is fairly new. You should be able to follow the directions for
Hotmail and MSN accounts.

What exactly is your problem?

I have a different problem but slightly in the same area.

I am using Entourage and acccessing my hotmail account through it. For over 2 years this has worked fine, just viewing hotmail messages live. When i send and receive it would simply show me the latest mail sitting on the server.

recently however, it has begun downloading all new hotmail messages to my local inbox and then shifting them from the hotmail inbox to the hotmail deleted folder.

I would prefer it to simply work as it was.

can you please help me find the cause of this problem.

You must have a rule that is moving the message. The most likely culprit is
the Mailing List Manager (MLM). It's very easy to set up a MLM rule by
accident, when you are marking a message as 'not junk'. The wording of that
dialog is ambiguous to say the least. Check if there is an MLM entry (look
for MLM entries under the tools menu) with the incorrect destination folder
as the target folder. Mailing List Manager rules run before your other
rules.

hi,
thanks for replying so quickly.
I've checked all settings, and rules. there are actually no rules set up at all on my entourage.

I had actually suspected that might be a rule, which is what makes it so confusing. unfortunately, there are none - so i am totally stuck on what it might be.

any other thoughts?
I should mention I'm on a mac - not sure if that makes any difference.

G

gavin

oops, of course you know I'm on a mac. as I'm posting on Mactopia... sorry about that, I'm posting in a couple of places to try and work this out.

I've checked all settings, and rules.

Did you check the Mailing List Manager? They are rules too.

There are 3 different kind of rules in Entourage:

Mailing List Manager (MLM)
Junk Mail Filter
Rules (custom rules you create)

They run in the order listed above. The custom rules also run in the order
they are listed. (top runs first)

G

well... i "think" this might have fixed it.
there was a MLM in place, weirdly though it was for only one email address... however when i deleted the rule, it seems as though it has fixed other problems...

though at this stage i am not 100% sure, as I have had false alarms before... but i certainly feel like its gotten further than before..

so thanks a million.

In 2004 it was really easy to accidentally set a Mailing List Manager rule.
The results has caused it to be a top 10 FAQ.
