Hotmail POP3 access in Outlook 2007

Since POP access has been made available to Hotmail users, I decided to
ditch Outlook Connector for downloading emailing and connect direct to my
inbox.

Initially, I found that when Hotmail messages were downloaded into Outlook
the original message was removed from the server and therefore could not be
accessed by visiting hotmail.com. After adjusting the appropriate setting in
Account Options I was able to leave a copy of an email on the server, but
there is still one small gripe I'm hoping someone can help me with.

I have Windows Live Messenger running and this informs me when a new email
has been recieved. I switch to Outlook to read it and it is marked as read
in the email client. However, Messenegr still reports that I have an unread
message and continues to do so until I read the message online. Is there any
way to stop this or will I have to revert back to using Outlook Connector?

Outlook cannot inform the server that a message has been read when you use a
POP server. Some servers will do that when the message gets sent to the
client, but not all. A POP mail server really has no need of a
"read/unread" flag. Apparently, Messenger keeps its own unread message
count.
