Hour glass keeps flashing on and off

The hour glass just started flashing on and off while
typing only within the Word program of Office Profession
XP. For the past 6 months, nothing happened. It just
suddenly appeared. Virus scan software isn't picking up
a virus.

Have you disabled the Office Plug-in in Norton AntiVirus? If not, do so.

I have McAfee Virus Scan Professional 8.0. It doesn't
have the Office Plug-in, I don't think.

No it doesn't. Make sure that Voice Recognition is turned off: you may have
to uninstall it to properly kill it off.

I have always had speech recognition on my computer. It
is turned off. I will uninstall it as a trouble shooting
plan, but I don't know if it will solve the problem.
Does anyone else have any ideas as to why, only in MS
Word, the autosave/hour glass keeps coming on every 10
seconds?

I have the same busy hourglass problem with Word/XP and
today excluded .doc and .dot files from the Norton
Antivirus auto protect option as suggested. This has
resulted in partial success. Word now works fine if used
straight after booting up but the problem returns if
another application is used and I then return to Word -
necessitating another re-boot. XP speech recognition is
still on the pc but switched off. Will remove this
tomorrow. At least it is not quite as annoying as it was -
many thanks for suggestions so far.

I have exactly the same issue. (See post "Mysterious
Background Activity" from a few days ago) Started
happening just recently as described. Can anyone tell me
how to remove speech recognition?

thanks,

Open Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Select Office and choose Change. In
the list of bit you will find a section labelled 'Alternative Inputs'.
Select them and click OK and setup will uninstall the features (get rid of
all of the alternative inputs, not just speech). I'd also recommend (as a
belt and brace thing) that you go to the Regions & Languages button, select
the Languages tabs, Advanced button and uninstall Handwriting Recognition.

Terry,

Thanks for the note. Unfortunately, when I drill down to
the "bits", my only choices are "Help", "Back", "Update"
and "Cancel". No option to remove! Any ideas? When I
right click on the "Speech Recognition" index, I get the
choices:

Run from my computer
Run all from my computer
Installed on First Use
Not Available

Maybe I need to reactivate it to delete it?

If Alternative Inputs are not installed, I believe there will have a RED X
against it, so selecting Not Available won't do anything. However, if it is
installed, then select Not Available and then OK (or is it Update?) and then
set up will uninstall it.

Terry,

Thanks for reply. That worked. I was unable to install
the speech recognition. Unfortunately, it did not solve
the background activity. Further adding to the mystery,
is that when you first open word after a reboot, the thing
works fine for 5-10 mintues, or until you open explorer.
When you return to word, the background activity returns
every 10 seconds. I'm still scratching my head.....

Hello,

I experienced a similar problem. In another post, the
solution was suggested. It is the latest Brother printer
driver. In my case, it was for an HL-1440. I removed the
printer and the problem went away. I reinstalled the
original driver which came in the box with the printer and
had no problem. It was only the latest version of the
driver downloaded from the Brother website that caused the
problem.

Is that Internet Explorer or Windows Explorer? Have you scanned your system
with SpyBot?
