Hour glass pointer appears every 4 sec. after opening MS Word, why

PC appears to be performing a function every 4 to 5 seconds after opening MS
Word. "In use", "hour glass" pointer appears and stays for 2 to 3 seconds.
Flickers on and off during that time. Typing fuctions are halted on screen
but semi-present in the background after cursor returns. If a dialog box is
opened, the cursor jumps out of the box.

Very unproductive!

Machine has been trouble free for over 1 year.
XP Pro
Office small business edition 2003
Adware and Norton Anit Virus are current and clean.

I believe a setting may have been tweeked, however I can't find it.

Perhaps try with Office Norton AV plugin disabled

You might also want to make sure that you don't have any other programs that
are office related or linked to your document, that might be opened at the
same time.
