Hover button problem-

N

Nigel

Hello
Have recently discovered a problem with some computers /
software not being able to 'see' or load the hover buttons
or links on our web site - www.soundandlightcity.co.za
The square boxes appear where the buttons should be, but
no buttons. Clients therefore cannot navigate from the
home page. I physically saw a new PC running on Windows XP
home edition with this exact problem. What's wrong or what
am I doing wrong?

Regards
Nigel

Hover buttons require Java Virtual Machine. ( not to be confused with javascript )
New computers do not come with JVM installed. It must be downloaded and installed from
www.java.sun.com
For this reason, most people have stopped using Hover Buttons and use image swaps using dhtml or
Behaviors.
Behaviors are a FP 2003 feature.

A good alternative to this is DHTML, as Steve mentions.

If you want to do DHTML menus in a visual development environment, try DHTML
Menu by Sothink. www.sothink.com

Thanks Steve, a major flaw though wouldn't you say? I mean
one constructs an entire corporate web site, only to find
out that probably 20 - 30% of visitors can't navigate
through the site. Very dissappointing. I'm sure the
original idea was not to have to add all kinds of extra
facilities just to enable navigation. Your comments would
be appreciated.

Thanks Rich, I've posted a reply to Steve. Please read
this and give me your thoughts. I'm quite infuriated with
this - it's a big dissappointment, but perhaps I'm wrong?
Thank you

Yes it's frustrating, but please understand it wasn't a decision by Microsoft that they just stop
using JVM, it was a result of a lawsuit by Sun that forced them to stop, beginning with Windows XP
and IE 6.
The lawsuit has been settled and Microsoft can again use JVM, but whether they will include it in
future updates or future OS versions is unknown at this time. ( to the best of my knowledge that
is )

Nigel-
When MS developed FP this was not an issue- most PCs had
a JVM on them. Then this court case thing comes along and
MS can no longer distribute their version of the JVM. I
found out about this early and stopped the use of them and I
chose a different technology. From what I have heard, MS
moved the hover buttons in FP03 to an out of the way place
so that they are not used as often.

Webmasters need to be aware of many things when developing
sites. This is one of them. Different OSs and browsers
support different features. What works in one does not work
in another. The webmaster needs to pick and choose what
they are going to use. I chose to use DHTML & javascript
instead of hover buttons. I also put in standard hyperlinks
for navigation because I check my web logs and I know that
12% of the browsers accessing my site do not support
javascript. I have also put in the ALT tags on the images
as there are a few people who view my site using Lynx, which
only supports text.
