How add un-numbered Heading1 in doc., w/out un-numbering the rest?

Hi,

I have Word 2003, and have been able to do the following in another
document, but can't reproduce it now.

I want to add a Heading1 to a section, but leave it un-numbered, as it's not
really part of the outline. But when I make it un-numbered, it "tends" to
un-number all other Heading1's. But somehow I was able to fudge it by
toggling it back and forth, at one point.

The whole point of this is to make this un-numbered section show up in the
ToC!

Is there any hope of this?

Create an unnumbered heading style that is formatted the same as your
numbered heading but not based on it. Give it the same outline level as the
numbered heading, and it will automatically appear in the TOC at that level.
For example, when I have numbered chapter titles, I have a duplicate (but
unnumbered) Front Matter Head style that is used for the Preface and other
front matter, plus a TOC Head that is identical except for having an outline
level of Body Text so that it *doesn't* appear in the TOC.

Well, it involves messing w/ Styles, and whenever I do that, all hell breaks
loose. And I can't afford to do this now, as we get our document deliverable
out... But will play w/ it when I get extra time later... Thx!

Hi again, Suzanne,

I thought I'd tell you a shortcut to what I wanted to achieve here, for what
it's worth. I happend to notice that I had checked the "automatically update"
box under the Heading1 style. And remembering somewhere reading that you
usually NEVER want to do that, I decided to UNcheck it, and see if I could so
what i wanted, and sure enough, it worked! I created a Heading1,
un-numbered, and yet the rest of my Heading1's remained numbered! I
re-generated the ToC and it worked just fine!

Maybe this is cheating, but it saved me a lot of time -- and it worked!

Glad you got this working, Ms Barnhill is very helpful .
Anyway back to your problem, there is an toolbar button in Word called Skip
Numbering which will do what you want. This toolbar button not only
un-numbers an individual paragraph but will also un-bullet an individual
bullet item. This toolbar button can be found via Toolbar Customize, Commands
tab, All Commands category, SkipNumbering. This button can be dragged to your
toolbar for future use.
Be aware that any sub-section numbers will reflect the change, ie go down
one number. This attribute can be reversed by applying the style again.
Automatically Update is a good feature and can save a lot of time when
reformatting, but usually it causes users more problems than benefits (if you
look back on previous postings).

I find it extremely odd that MS have hidden this very useful tool so deep. I
use it very frequently, I have even had a play and made an icon image for it
