Working on a Word document someone else formatted and having difficulty
making changes. How can I add a numeric scheme, such as Roman numerals, to my
TOC without wreaking havoc on the document? Tried to do so manually to no
avail.

You can add numbering to the TOC styles, but if the headings themselves are
numbered, the TOC should be picking up the numbering. To number the TOC
styles, use the same techniques outlined in
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html, but apply
them to the TOC styles instead of the headings.
