How can I activate an external microphone to use in One Note?

Try as I might, the only microphone I can get my tablet pc, on which I'm
trying to use One Note, is the default, installed microphone. What I want to
use is an sensitive external mic that gives better sound quality. I don't
see any place to add a microphone or any option of where the tablet should
recognize the sound. This doesn't seem like a hard question, but apparently
it's too hard for me.

Does your tablet have an external mic jack? Normally just plugging in a mic
in one of those cuts off the internal one, just like plugging in headphones
cuts off the internal speakers.

If that doesn't work, in OneNote go to Tools/Options/Audio and video and
select the external mic.

Can anybody recommend a good external mic? There are so many and I get the
impression that most of them are junk. Don't want to waster my time and
money experimenting.
