How can I assign a task to a group of resources in Project?

I'm planning an event and most of the tasks involved will be done by
committees or work groups of three to five people. In Project 2003 Standard,
I've grouped the resources (people) by their committee names, but when I try
to assign tasks to each committee using the project guide, it only shows me
the list of all the individual resources to choose from, not the groups that
I put them in.

Hi

the "resource group" field is used for filtering / sorting & printing
purposes not for assignment purposes.

With resources, Project deals with them based on the Resource Name, now if
Committee A consists of three people and whenever any work is done by
Committee A, between 1 & 3 people are required but it doesn't matter WHO
then enter the resource name as Committee A and the max units as 300%.

However, if it does matter for any task at all, who in Committee A does the
work, then you have to enter as you have, as individuals and then when all
of them are needed on a task you need to assign the 3 members individually,
and if it doesn't matter which one of them does something, then,
unfortunately, you need to nominate one of them. To make it easier on
yourself you could preface their names with their committee names and then
use the Initials column for how you want their names to appear when you
print it out on the gantt chart.

Hope this (makes senses and) helps
Cheers

Hi PR III,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

Adding to Julie's advice, be aware that if you assign the Committee to a
task and also assign the individuals to other tasks at the same time, you
will have a physical overallocation of those resources that Project will not
recognize as it does not know the constituents of Committee. I would always
recommend assigning the individual resources for that reason, then any
overallocations will show up.

FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at
this web address: <http://www.mvps.org/project/>

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :))

PR III --

There is an indirect method you can use to accomplish your goal. Assuming
you have entered the committee name for each resource in the Group column in
the Resource Sheet, here's how to assign a committee to a task:

1. Open the project in question
2. Select the first task requiring a committee
3. Click the Assign Resources button on the Standard toolbar
4. Expand the Resource list options at the top of the dialog
5. Select the first Filter by checkbox
6. Click the Filter by pick list and select the Group... filter
7. Enter the name of the committee and click OK
8. The resulting list contains the members of the committee, so select
everyone and click Assign

Just an additional thought to what Julie and Mike said. Hope this helps.
