How can I automatically advance a form field once a value is met?

How can I automatically advance a form field once a value is met? For
instance, if I have a date field such as MM/dd/YYYY, how can I get it to
automatically advance to the date once I have entered two digits for the
month, then advance to the year once I have entered two digits for the date,
etc. without having to tab to the next field?
