How can I avoid Word crashing when I download a document?

Everytime I try to download a word file (format is irevelant) from Internet
Explorer, Word will open but always reports that it cannot find the file I
was trying to open. So I have to download the document again.

Surely there is some way I can make this process more efficient. Help?
