How can I be sure what is selected with multiple layers of objects

Sorry for the dumb question, but if I am building a custom animation, my
view of the slide becomes cluttered and while I know I can use the TAB key to
cycle through objects for single selections, how can I get feedback as to
what exactly is selected? For instance, say I have two text boxes on top of
eachother, same width and height. How can I tell which is selected?

Thanks!

Check on the Custom Animation pane (2003). This will show the name and number
(in order of creation) and the first few letters of what is typed in the box.
Does this help?

Jake,

It's a shame powerpoint does not have a 'status' bar like most other apps.

Jake,
Try this free tool: Shape Console - http://skp.mvps.org/sconsole.htm

Shape console will display a miniature floating window within PowerPoint
which will show the current selected shapes on the slide. This is very handy
when you wish to tab through shapes which are layered below another. You
will always know exactly what shape is selected.
