How can I calculate hours between times with dates that are great.

I have been successful at calculation of hours in a spreadsheet by entering
times, and using dates when the midnight hour is crossed. But I have been
unable to make the formula work for periods of time that expand over 24
hours. How can I fix the formula? I am fairly weak in excel formulas (self
taught), and have used only the basic math so far. I formatted the data cells
as "custom, m/d/yyyy h:mm", and the product as "custom, h:mm". This works
fine on the calculations that are less than 24 hours. So what should I do?
Thanks in advance.

Format the product as "custom, [h]:mm". The brackets allow the h value to be
more than 24.
