how can i change my file lists from reverse alphabetical order

Knows just enough to be dangerous

I'm probably being an idiot, but...when i try to open a file the list of
files now presents itself in reverse alphabeitcal order. It was previously
in alphabetical order, I sorted by date and then tried to sort by name and it
went in reverse alpha. I have tried to resort again by name, but the listing
always appears in reverse alpha with the folders at the end. It's driving me
nuts. Please give me some guidance. I know the answer is there, i just
can't find it.
