How can I compress a graphic/image in a file

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

In a previous version of Word it was possible to compress a graphic/image and which then gave you an option to compress all other graphics/images in the same file. This was fantastic because it would greatly reduce the file size and make it more easily emailed. Saves using a zip software to reduce a file.

I don't think Mac Word has ever had this feature.

PC Word 2003 and later can crop and re-sample images to reduce their size.

Mac Word 2004 could crop images. Word 2008 can't, it has no raster graphic
editor in it.

You will need to use an external graphics program to compress your images.

There is no point in Zipping a .docx file, it already IS a .zip file, with a
different extension.

And there is no point in Zipping graphics: they will not compress any
further than they already have been (without losing quality).

Just to avoid confusion ‹ You can crop images in 2008 just as always. What
2007 [and perhaps 2003] offers that 2008 doesn't is that there is an option
to have the cropped area deleted from the file.

Microsoft would do so also!!

The Office 2008 "crop" command is actually a "mask" command.

But what the OP is missing is Word 2003's "Crop and resample" command, which
is a very handy one-click shrink...

Not that I disagree, John, but you can't really fault MS on the semantics...
After all, Photoshop uses the same terminology. If you want to *delete* the
cropped area from a image it requires an extra step and "masking" is an
editing tool as well as having other implications (such as layer masks &
clipping masks).

Just for information: while not having anything to contribute relating to
Word's [in]capabilities in this area, I strongly recommend ImageWell for
allowing very precise sizing of images inserted (via Insert menu => Picture)
into Word documents.

Harrumph!!! In CorelDRAW (and, I think, in Illustrator...) "Crop" means
"Cut off the pixels outside the selected area!"

What Word is doing would be referred to as "Lens From Mask" if I wanted to
be pedantic.

But you know me, unlike that Huggan creature, pedantry is completely unknown
in my lexicon...
