How can I control file size of a word.doc file?

I'm working on a document that has suddenly ballooned from 250 KB to 2.5 MB
in size. I cut and pasted somes charts, two from another word doc and one
from a .pdf file.

Anyway to limit or control this file size creep? I will need to email the
finished document, so file size is a concern.
