How can I convert a rescued document from text to word?

I edited a document stored on a flash drive. when closed the document Word
asked if I wanted to save the changes - I responded Yes. While saving the
document I rec'd a message saying that Word had encountered a problem and had
to close. It also stated that the document would be rescued and saved.
The document is no longer on my flash drive in any form and search doesn't
find it on my hard drive. I have found a rescued document with the
appropriate date and time in text format that opens in notebook. There are
enough legible words to enable me to confirm this is the document I'm looking
for, but most of the text consists of question marks. I am running Office
2000 on XP. Any suggestions?
Thanks

If you encountered the error while saving then first check for temp files in
the same folder the document was stored in. When Word saves a file a temp
file is created, the original is deleted, and the temp file is renamed to
take the original's place. If it crashed at just the right point then the
temp file could still be available containing the entire contents of your
document.

As an additional note, it's not a good idea to work directly off of
removable media. It's safer to copy the file to your hard drive (I use the
Desktop) and then copy it back once you are finished editing the file. I've
lost a couple of important documents by working directly off a flash drive
and will never do it again.
