How can I determine what a "mergefield-like" text represents?

I have a Word document from a 3rd party. It's used to prepare letters to
send to participants to identify their specific parameters. There are
several mergefields included in the document, which are not an issue. One of
the "fields" that we need to change is a field similar (I guess) to a
mergefield.

The field format as it appears in the document is [**qryname**]. The
qryname is not actual text, but represents the actual query used to capture
data. The [** **] are actual text from the document. This structure
supplies data to the letter based on the query.

I don't know what the text represents, nor how to change it (which I need to
do). Information will be appreciated.
