How can I do this

M

MB

I have 2 versions of WORD on my computer.
The first is WORD 97, located: "C:\Program Files\Microsoft
Office\Office\WINWORD.EXE"

The second is WORD 2002 and it is not clear to me where it is located (I
have the shortcut on my desktop, but when I right click and look at the
General Tab, it doesn't indicate where it is located -- I know it came with
my computer, part of WORKS SUITE 2002).

Anyway, when I click on a .doc file, it opens with WORD 2002.

I want it to open with WORD 97. I can't seem to get it to do this. I try and
right click on a .doc file and use the Open With command, but I can't seem
to get it to open with WORD 97. Even when I point it to the WINWORD.EXE
file, it then specifies WORD and again open with WORD 2002. Any idea what I
might be doing wrong??

The executable for all versions of Word is named winword.exe. Are you sure
you still have Word 97 installed, that it was not overwritten by the
installation of Word 2002 in Works Suite? Do you have a shortcut to Word 97
on the desktop or Start Menu?

Suzanne:

Yes, I have both. Thanks for the information about winword.exe being the
..exe file for all versions of WORD. I didn't know that, but it allowed to
find all the versions.

First, I do have shortcuts to each version on my desktop.
Second, I also have a shortcut to WORD97 on my STAR menu.

But, here are the locations of my two WORD programs:

WORD 2002 is in c:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10

WORD97 is in c:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office

Somehow, I can't seem to get the docs associated with the latter file.

One of the reasons I want to use WORD97 is that I have MATHTYPE and it is a
stand-alone program but also incorporated into WORD97 (seperate symbols and
as a menu item). Even when I upgraded MathType, it still found itself in
WORD97.

I need that program, so it is much easier to use WORD97.

Any new idea?

Because Windows can't have more than one file association for the .doc file
extension, it will usually open Word docs in the Word version that was last
used. And later versions of Word are more aggressive about seizing the file
association than earlier ones. You should certainly be able to use MathType
with Word 2002, however. You might want to see the Design Science Web site
(www.dessci.com) for suggestions about installing it in Word 2002. In the
meantime, if you just start Word 97 before opening files, you will have no
trouble.

You can use either Word 2002 or Word 97 with MathType. However,
you left out one very important piece of information -- the
version of MathType you're using.

Regardless of the version of MathType, if you install Word
*after* you install MathType, it won't be registered into Word
(i.e., the MathType icons won't be on your toolbar, but you can
still use MathType via Word's Insert > Object command).

Even if you installed Word first, then installed MathType, if
you're using MathType 4, it still won't be on your Word 2002
toolbar. Simple reason for this -- Word 2002 was released after
MathType 4, so naturally MathType 4 doesn't support Word 2002
without some manual re-configuring on your part. (If you have
MathType 5, the point is moot. Simply un-install and re-install
MathType, and that should solve your problem.)

We have an article on our web site that discusses how to get the
MathType 4 toolbar in Word 2002. You can read the article at:

Hello Bob:

How nice to see a post from you. We just spoke last weekend. I was at the
MCTM meeting. I went to your Saturday session.

I had asked you about the different versions at the end of your talk. You
may recall that I had gotten a new system and I asked you how to get Math
Type incorporated again into WORD97. Yes, I do have version 4.0. I checked
with your company and I was only able to upgrade it to 4.0b. However, the
upgrade did once again insert Math Type (symbols and menu item) into WORD
97.

I'll check out that article!

Hi Mel,

Yes, I remember. I didn't have much time before my flight, but I
remember the question.
Yes, I do have version 4.0. I checked with your company

I'm sure they're talking about a free upgrade when they say 4.0b
is as far as you can go. To upgrade it farther than that, the
charge is $49.95. If you're interested in seeing what all's in
the upgrade, see
<http://www.dessci.com/en/products/mathtype/win/upgrade.htm>.
