There isn't enough information in your message to say for sure, but if the
"characters" you refer to as text are an integral part of the picture it
cannot be edited in Word - what you are seeing is a *picture* of the
characters, not editable text. Any changes would have to be done in a
graphics program.
It is possible, however, that the picture is a Grouped Object made up of an
image with one or more Text Boxes. Right-Click the picture & look at the
Grouping submenu to see if Ungroup appears as an available command. If so,
select it, which should render the Text Box editable.
