Hi, Im pretty new to using project. I've got all my info into the time plan,
at the top i have entered all holiday periods so they are clear to see.

When i have tryed to make these non working days they appear in the
calender, but this does not adjust and allow for this time in the plan/gant
chart - eg i want the completion date to finish 2 weeks later because of a
summer shutdown period.

cant find the answer in tutorial... can anyone help please??

Hello ad-rav,

Setting specific days as non-working time in the project calendar
should adjust the schedule. I'm not sure from your description what
you've done -- what do you mean by "at the top I have entered all
holiday periods.." Have you added tasks for the holidays?

See the information on adding non-working time to calendars in FAQ #5
"Default Working Hours" at:
http://project.mvps.org/faqs.htm

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

I entered hoiday periods as tasks in a different colour at the top of the
timeplan so they are easy for the customer to see. (this didnt adjust the
scheduel)

after reading the FAQ maybe it is becaue i changed the non-working time
after i had put in all the dates.

I have some milestone dates that fall in shutdown, i wish for them to
automaticly move to the next working day after the holiday period.

I will try a new plan setting the dates first and see if it works. Thanks

Okay, that worked - thanks very much

one other thing, If I want to show the holiday periods on the gant chart how
do i do this?

You're welcome and thanks for the feedback.

Just as a quick note -- milestone tasks can be scheduled for
non-working time because they have zero duration. If you really want
the tasks to obey a calendar, enter 1m (minute) duration and you
should be all set.

To you new question: non-working time set in the Project calendar
should be visible as grey shade in the background of the Gantt chart.
The background of the Gantt chart is usually showing the non-working
time from the "Standard" calendar. Easy fix however: choose Format >
Timescale in the menu and select the non-working time tab. Choose the
correct calendar from the drop-down.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Again thanks alot, that did help. I now have time off showing in the
calendar, i have set timescale to 'in front of task bar' which shows holiday
periods,

However, when i have the gant chart compressed (major = weeks and minor
=days) so that i can print off the full plan on an A4 sheet it does not show
holiday periods.

I wanted to put holiday periods in as tasks that would show as a block, (the
period of days that are non working) which i can put in a different colour -
It wont let me put these in as i have changed them to non working days as you
would expect.

Is there a way of displaying this information on the gant chart so that the
person reading it can clearly see the holiday periods in the compressed gant
chart? - (hope i'm making sense)

You're welcome for the help. As you note when you zoom out of the
Gantt chart you loose details. You certainly could manually add all
the holidays in as tasks (you'd need to change your calendar again),
but the advantage of changing the working schedule is that tasks
automatically adjust for non-working time. By adding the holidays as
tasks, you'd have to make the adjustments manually.

If you entered the holidays as tasks, I think you'd have the same
trouble as well -- compressing the timescale so you can print will
loose the details on those tasks.

Sorry, no magic answer on this one :)

Good luck and do let us know if you have any further questions.

Best,
Julie
