How can I find alt commands? Want the upside down question mark.

If you have the "smart quotes" autoformat-as-you-type option set and the
language set to Spanish then when you type a leading question mark it will
be automatically turned upside down.

I couldn't find it in the "insert"->"symbol". I had to look under "Insert
an international character by using a shortcut key" in the help.

Character Map has the advantage that it's available in all Windows apps. But
I find Insert | Symbol more congenial in Word, especially since you've got
one-click access to a dialog for assigning a shortcut key.

Character Map also requires several steps. You have to click Select, the
Copy. Then, admittedly, you can paste the character anywhere. But in Word,
using Insert | Symbol, you just double-click on the character to insert it.

You can also keep the dialog open and step in and out of it to move the
insertion point and insert several characters. You can resize the dialog to
show more characters. And Word keeps track of recently used characters
(whether or not they're in the currently displayed font) to make it easier
to insert them.

One of the main disadvantages of Character Map is that you always have a
specific font selected, whereas the default setting in Word is "(normal
text)," that is, the font at the insertion point. A character inserted this
way is in the Default Paragraph Font and will change if you change the font
of the style.

I guess I use the character map because it's what I'm more accustomed to. Is
there any reason why I shouldn't?
