How can I force open my excel files ?

When I try to open one of my excel files via a shortcut nothing happens, and
the window does not open. The only ones I can open are the ones left on the
Office Excel memory . I can use excel but then if I save it I cannot open it .
I am totally lost and frustrated and need simple and clear advice to access
my work files again.
I use XP.

Try opening Excel, and going to Tools>Options>General and un-check, 'ignore
other applications'
